Denise Nolan - The Magic of Judy Garland
Wednesday
April 11th at 9 pm and Thursday April 12th at 9 pm (15€)
The
first of the famous singing family to take her solo chances, Denise
Nolan is now based in Blackpool but is sensibly making the most
of the current wave of nostalgia for the golden days of big bands
& Hollywood hits.
Always one to
stick to her guns, this is a tribute to one of her idols rather
than an imitation of her at times Nolan's voice does echo Garland's
but this isn't
Stars in Their Eyes, it is star takes on star.
Combining just
enough history of the troubled singing & acting star with a
peppering of Nolan minutiae she bases her repertoire around Garland's
memorable April 1963 Carnegie Hall concert accompanied by an excellent
seven piece Rainbow Orchestra.
Garland's back
catalogue never ceases to amaze & even with almost 90 minutes
worth there's still enough left for a second show. It's the big
ballads Nolan is
happiest with Stormy Weather, The Man That Got Away & I'm Always
Chasing
Rainbows all impress & by the time she encores with the Garland
signature
tune of Over the Rainbow she earns the standing ovation she receives.
Few
performers would dare step into the role of Judy Garland but Denise
Nolan does
with aplomb & her performance is both captivating & entertaining.
Her repertoire
includes classics such as The Trolley Song, San Francisco, Swanee,
The Man That Got Away & naturally, Over The Rainbow. Denise
appears direct from her West End triumph in Blood Brothers, where
she wowed audiences with her incredible voice. The Magic of Judy
Garland is a show full of theatrical delights and will delight &
charm fans of all ages.
